Griffin Theatre Company is the resident theatre company in the SBW Stables Theatre and is proud to manage and curate the venue on behalf of its owner, the Seaborn Broughton and Walford Foundation.
This historic theatre is the original home of the legendary Nimrod Theatre Company established by John Bell, Richard Wherrett and Ken Horler in 1970. Nimrod was one of the great birthplaces of contemporary Australian theatre.
The SBW Foundation (established at the instigation of Dr Rodney Seaborn AO OBE) purchased the Stables in 1986, rescuing it from demolition and securing Griffin a home when its future in the venue was in jeopardy.
With a capacity of only 120, the theatre is Sydney's most intimate and persuasive professional stage. The experience of theatre in this space is close-up, visceral, immediate and completely engaging.
The SBW Stables Theatre has a licensed bar and is located in the heart of one of Sydney's most thriving cafe and theatre districts.
Griffin acknowledges the generosity of the Foundation in allowing it, since 1986, the use of the theatre rent free, less outgoings.
