Griffin Award 2012

GRIFFIN AWARD 2012 – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Calling all Australian writers… the deadline for submissions to the 2012 Griffin Award is Tuesday, 14 February, 2012, 4pm! Don’t send us a Valentine, send us your new play instead.

The Griffin Award is an annual $10,000 prize offered for an outstanding new Australian play.

Now in its fifteenth year, the Griffin Award is generously sponsored by PKF Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors. The judges are looking for a new Australian play displaying an authentic, inventive and contemporary voice.

As a company we are looking for plays to go on our Griffin stage at the Stables theatre. While we cannot guarantee a production for the winning play, please know that we are very proud of our production of the 2009 Griffin Award winner Silent Disco by Lachlan Philpott this year, and we are thrilled to be producing the 2011 winning play A Hoax by playwright Rick Viede in our mainstage season in 2012. We are hoping that you send us plays which you consider a good fit for the Griffin stage both in terms of scale and story so that we can programme the winning play. If you are not familiar with the theatre drop in and see a show here or come by while the office is open and we will be happy to show you the beautiful 105 seat theatre with its very special but admittedly somewhat unusual diamond shaped stage.

Griffin is calling for submissions of original plays or performance texts to be assessed and shortlisted by the Griffin Resident Artists, to be put before a judging panel of industry leaders to select a winner. The Griffin Award has a long history of highlighting new talent and cementing the careers of emerging writers. Previous winners include Rick Viede (A Hoax 2011, Whore 2008) Aiden Fennessy (Brutopia, 2010), Lachlan Philpott (Silent Disco, 2009), Damien Millar (Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures, 2007), Mary Rachel Brown (Australian Gothic, 2006), Ian Wilding (The Carnivores, 2005), Debra Oswald (Mr Bailey’s Minder, 2004) and Brendan Cowell (Rabbit, 2003).

At the Griffin Festival of New Writing selections from all shortlisted plays will be read in the theatre and the winner will then be announced. We would encourage all lovers of new writing to come to the event for the chance to see the newest work of the best writers in the country. Last year’s short list included plays by Melissa Bubnic, Duncan Graham, Noelle Janaczewska, David Mence and Catherine Ryan. The Fesitval of New Writing is in June 2012
