For Writers
Griffin is committed to being accessible to artists and transparent in our processes. The company takes its dialogue with artists very seriously. If you share our passion for making the best contemporary theatre we want to hear from you. In addition to the avenues below, one of the best means of getting to know us is to come and see a show. We look forward to seeing you in the foyer soon.
Writing classes
Griffin offers a regular series of classes for both beginning and advanced playwrights. Led by Hilary Bell, playwright and educator, these classes will also be joined by a series of weekend intensives in 2010. For more information click here.
Residency
Griffin offers an annual residency for a number of playwrights. Over 12 months, the residency offers playwrights the chance to build a lasting relationship with the company.
Having developed Strangers in Between, Nailed and Strange Attractor in the past, the residency continues to play a vital part in helping playwrights find their voice. Past residents include Nicki Bloom, Jonathan Gavin, Jonathan Ari Lander, Caleb Lewis, Tommy Murphy, Sue Smith and Rick Viede.
In addition to financial assistance, workshops, readings and professional development, in 2010 all three playwrights feature and participate directly in Griffin’s annual program of productions with Graces, three short ten-minute plays presented throughout the year.
In 2010, Griffin welcomes Angus Cerini (Patrick White Playwrights’ Award winner for Wretch), Elise Hearst (Dirtyland) and Lachlan Philpott (Colder, winner of the 2009 Griffin Award for Silent Disco).
Appointment to the residency is by invitation, but we encourage you to present your work to us through submission to the Griffin Award, and by inviting us to any production or reading of your work throughout the year. Please send invitations to info@griffintheatre.com.au.
The Griffin Award
The Griffin Award is an annual $10,000 prize offered for an outstanding new Australian play or performance text. The 2010 Award has been made possible by PKF Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers, who have now sponsored this prestigious prize for the last five years.
Now in its 13th year, the Griffin Award celebrates the bright future of Australian drama with more than 140 nominations received from every state in 2010. Entry for the 2010 Griffin Award is now closed. The winner of the 2010 Griffin Award will be announced at the SBW Stables Theatre on 17 August. For more information on the Griffin Award, email info@griffintheatre.com.au.
Unsolicited Scripts
Due to resource limitations, Griffin is regrettably unable to receive unsolicited scripts. We do, however, encourage all writers to submit their work to us through the Griffin Award. We are also part of PlayWriting Australia’s national scheme for the reading of unsolicited scripts Postscript. More information about postscript can be found here.
Script Assessment services
Griffin Theatre Company recommends playwrights contact The Australian Writers’ Guild for paid script assessment services. The Guild has launched a new and improved service for members in 2009. For further information please contact The Australian Writers’ Guild at admin@awg.com.au.
Independent Productions of new Australian work
Representatives from Griffin Theatre Company will attend independent productions where possible. In the past, this has led to the transfer of productions such as Nicki Bloom’s Tender (from Belvoir’s B Sharp 2007 season to the 2008 Griffin main-stage season). If you would like to invite us to attend a production, please contact us with details of the production to info@griffintheatre.com.au.
Meet us
We have set aside a weekly time to meet with writers who would like to speak to us about a particular project, or their work in general. Email belinda@griffintheatre.com.au for more information.
