Playwriting

Since 1986, Griffin Theatre Company has recognised and celebrated the primacy of the playwright in its own creative process, with an ongoing commitment to the discovery, development and production of new writing.

Through its own productions, Griffin presents the most innovative new work from Australian writers. Through Griffin Independent, the company presents the best in new international writing, co-producing with independent artists.

Each year, Griffin develops, commissions, publishes and produces a significant body of new work. Some of these productions are staged at Griffin’s home venue, the SBW Stables Theatre. Productions are occasionally presented with co-producers in other venues, and frequently toured to metropolitan and regional venues throughout Australia.
Alongside these productions, Griffin continues to develop extensive artist and artform development programs. With playwriting classes, playwrights’ residencies, workshops and an active literary department, Griffin remains at the forefront of Australia’s playwriting culture.
